The city of Jerusalem, no one knows when the last time Jerusalem was in peace, where Palestinians label the city as there’s and Israel marks it as one of their territories. Recently, a dispute between Jewish Palestinians and the Israeli Police erupted into chaos near the Damascus gate. A restless night for the Authorities.
Thousands of Palestinian Jewish extremists were seen marching towards the Old City of Jerusalem while chanting the phrase “Death to Arabs”. There were already ongoing tensions in the city since the start of Ramadan, Ramadan is considered a Holy month for Muslims. Due to rising tensions, the U.S embassy in Jerusalem put out a statement asking authorities and concerned officials to use any means necessary and stop any inducement to rage.
Extremists were seen throwing glass bottles and rocks at the Police while protesting, they also managed to break a Pole with security cameras on it, lit it on fire, and used it as a barricade. The Police responded to these actions by using non-lethal weapons at the protestors which were rubber bullets, stun grenades, and a foul-smelling liquid was sprayed at the protestors by the use of water cannons. Police also used barricades to block off another march which was also making way towards the Damascus Gate by supporters of the “Lehava” movement.
The Damascus Gate was the center of demonstrations Friday evening, Thousands of young Palestinians rallied to protest the closure of its plaza space, a popular outing area for youngsters during Ramadan.
Fuel to the fire was the recent videos being posted on TikTok which were seen encouraging acts of assault and misbehavior between Palestinians and Israelis. One video which was cycled on social media multiple times was about a young Palestinian slapping two religious Jewish people who were at the time, commuting in the city’s light rail tram service.
Another video has caught the eye of people where several Palestinian youths were seen kicking a Jewish adult, who was laying on the ground, trying to protect his head while being repeatedly assaulted.
One more video made its way to Social-Platforms where Jewish teenagers can be seen throwing rocks, sticks, and other miscellaneous objects at an Arab family’s house, screams of a baby from within the compound can also be heard clearly in the video.
To all these acts of violence, U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem stated that the Embassy is deeply concerned about the acts of violence and the reported incidents in Jerusalem. The Embassy also stated that we hope all concerned authorities will support efforts promoting an end to incitement, an interruption of the peacefulness of Jerusalem, and for the safety of its residents.
Police and the Palestinian Red Crescent have reported that 105 Palestinians were injured, out of which 22 required urgent hospitalization. Followed by 20 Police officers who were mildly injured out of which 3 officers were taken to the hospital. Local Police have stated that 44 arrests were made.
